eMule operates on two parallel networks: the eD2K network, which relies on centralized servers to index available files, and the Kad network, which is decentralized. When the eD2K server list is empty or outdated, the software can no longer locate sources, even if the file exists somewhere on the network. Updating this list and adjusting the network settings are the two prerequisites for the program to remain functional.

Adjusting eMule to Your Connection Before Modifying Servers

Most guides focus on the server list. The problem often lies elsewhere: a poorly calibrated network configuration renders servers useless, even the most reliable ones.

The first step is to measure the actual speed of the connection (downstream and upstream bandwidth). On a fiber line, the default values in eMule are often too low. On a shared connection (residential, 4G/5G), they can, on the contrary, saturate the bandwidth and cause disconnections.

In eMule’s connection settings, the fields for upload bandwidth limit deserve manual adjustment. Leaving the upload unlimited on an asymmetric fiber connection, for example, will choke the household’s regular HTTP traffic. A reasonable setting is to not exceed two-thirds of the measured upstream bandwidth.

The other overlooked point concerns the ports. eMule uses two ports (TCP and UDP) that must be opened in the system’s firewall and redirected on the router.   • Direct import: download a server.met file from a trusted source, then open it with eMule (Servers menu, then “Import a server.met file”). The software then replaces its existing list.
  • Automatic URL: in the software settings, enter a web address pointing to an online-hosted server.met file. eMule downloads the list at each launch, ensuring regular updates without manual intervention.
  • Manual addition: enter the IP address and port of a specific server in the designated fields. This method is mainly used to test a specific server or to add one that is not listed in public lists.

The URL method is the most reliable over time. It prevents forgetting to update for months and ending up connected to dead or compromised servers.

The official eMule site offers two distinct branches. The stable version 0.50a has not evolved for several years. The Community branch 0.70b includes fixes and improvements made by third-party developers. Both manage the server.met file in the same way, but the Community version better supports modern connections and fixes some connectivity bugs. For use in 2024, the Community branch is preferable if the system allows (recent Windows).

Filtering Fake eMule Servers with IP Lists

Fraudulent servers have been a long-standing problem on the eD2K network. A fake server can return tampered search results, inject corrupted files, or collect the IP addresses of connected users.

IP filters automatically block connections to addresses identified as malicious. eMule natively integrates this feature. In the security options, you can enter the URL of an ipfilter.dat file. This file, maintained by the community, contains the ranges of addresses to ban.

Some complementary practices enhance the security of the server list:

  • Remove all existing servers before importing a new list to avoid keeping dubious entries accumulated over time.
  • Uncheck the option “Update server list at startup from other clients,” which allows unknown peers to inject servers into the local list.
  • Regularly check that the list does not contain duplicates or servers showing zero connected users, a sign that they are out of service.

What to Do When Updating Servers Doesn’t Solve Anything

Reloading a server list does not fix all download issues. If the status remains LowID after the update, the blockage comes from the local network. The Windows firewall, the router’s firewall, or an antivirus intercepting outgoing connections are the most common causes.

When eMule connects correctly to the servers (HighID) but finds no sources, the Kad network can serve as a complement to the eD2K network. Kad operates without a central server, making it insensitive to failures of the server.met list. However, the initial bootstrapping of Kad requires a successful first connection to an eD2K server or the import of a nodes.dat file.

Another common case: rare files simply no longer appear on the network. The eMule user base has decreased over the years. A file that had dozens of sources ten years ago may have none today. No server setting will change this reality. In this case, checking if the file exists on other protocols (torrent, Usenet) remains the most pragmatic solution.
